Admissions

Admission applications are managed through the Derbyshire Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme and are in line with the Derbyshire Admission arrangements for community and voluntary controlled schools.

As a member of  the EMBARK Federation Multi-academy Trust, we are required to set and publish our own admissions criteria.

As a Derbyshire County Council school we are required to give places to children unless we have reached our capacity.  This refers to the total number of children in school rather than class size.  For all practical purposes this means that admission is granted to all who apply within our catchment area.

Parents of pupils in Year 2 who have made an application to join us, will be invited to a meeting in the summer term to exchange information, meet our staff and answer any questions you may have.

If you are new to Kilburn, we prefer you to visit us before your child starts school, to show you around and have a general chat about your child, your expectations of us and our expectations of you and your child.

All applications to the school must be made online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk

If you have any questions about your child starting at Kilburn Junior School, please call the office.

ATTENDANCE

It is essential that your child attends school each time the school is open unless there is a very good reason they cannot do so. Even short absences can hinder a child’s progress and confidence.

It is also essential for us to know why a child has not attended, as the law requires us to distinguish between those absences allowed by law and those which are not.

Our school policy states that all children should be working towards achieving a target of at least 95% attendance, as there is strong evidence to suggest that attendance below this has a direct impact on how well children do at school.

Illness

If your child is ill, please let us know before 9am if possible either by phone call or email. Please note that children should not return to school within 48 hours of suffering sickness or diarrhoea.

If your child is ill in school you will be contacted and asked to collect him/her as soon as possible. On arrival, please see the school office, who will arrange for you to meet your child and we will sign your child out.

Medical / Dental Appointments

For medical appointments, please inform the office in advance of the date and time you will be collecting your child. We will also need to know if they will still require a lunch should they be arriving late after a morning appointment.

Applying for Leave of Absence

Should the need arise for your child to be absent from school with prior knowledge, you will need to complete an Exceptional Leave of Absence request form, obtained from the school office or by clicking on this link. This is then submitted anonymously to a panel of governors who use Trust guidance to decide if the request is recorded as an ‘Authorised’ or ‘Unauthorised’ absence in your child’s attendance record.
