Kilburn Junior School Art Gallery

On Thursday afternoon, Kilburn Junior School hosted our first ever art gallery and what an event it was!  Children in the Lower School produced works inspired by the work of artists including Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock to highlight the issues of deforestation and climate change.  This was followed by the opportunity to plant a number of trees in the school grounds.   Sales of their artwork will go towards supporting the work of the Woodland Trust.

Our Upper school children were inspired by the work of  L.S Lowry to produce a range of superb pieces of art too.

We couldn't have done this without the help and support of these organisations/individuals:

  • Friends of Ripley Greenway;
  • Shipley Garden Centre who donated a number of trees, a spade, a fork, trowel and mini fork;
  • Ikea and Wilkinsons who donated picture frames;
  • Our PTFA who also donated some picture frames;
  • Our local MP, Nigel Mills who attended and supported the event;
  • The Mayor of Amber Valley, John Walker who officially opened the gallery;
  • Everyone who attended the event to support the children;
  • And finally, all of the children and staff who worked so hard to produce such a memorable event.

Below, there is a link to a video of a dance performed Team Courage and you can view photographs of the event here.

St Clements Church Christingle Service

A very warm welcome greeted the lower school choir this Sunday at St Clements Church. Children and their families were invited to join prayers, singing and a celebration of the final Sunday of Christmas. The uplifting service, with four of our children reading prayers and the choir singing two of our production songs, ended with the lighting of the Christingle candle. The choir really did Kilburn Junior School proud. Thank you to all parents, grandparents and children and to Sheila and the church congregation for making us all feel so welcome.

Y3/4 Handball

Huge congratulations to our Y3/4 handball team. Due to illness we had a much smaller squad than usual, but despite this, our team played outstandingly well and showed incredible skills with passing and throwing for their ages and finished 4th out of a total of 12 teams! An incredible achievement on its own, but for many of these children, it was their first opportunity to represent our school in a sporting competition. Well done to you all.

Girls' Football County Final

Last Thursday, our girls' football team took part in the Derbyshire School Games County Final, following their phenomenal and unbeaten performance at the Amber Valley tournament last month. The girls faced the best 9 teams, selected from the winners of each region across the whole of Derbyshire, this being  from a total of over 400 schools.

The girls showed incredible determination, skill and teamwork, especially in some unbelievably cold and wet weather to finish 3rd place on their first ever representation of Amber Valley in the Football County Final.

A huge well done to all of our team for their achievement and to all of their parents for their support. A special thank you also to Jason, for helping me coach the team on a very, very wet day.

Brilliant Basketball

Well done to our brilliant basketball team who finished 4th in their recent tournament. The team played extremely well and scored some fantastic shots in some incredibly close games. IMG_1580

Night Cycle

Tonight saw the first outdoor session of our winter cycling club. The children showed off some fantastic skills on our off road course, practised sending their bike into a skid, before then safely regaining control and finished off with a group ride around our school playgrounds, all whilst showing off some very cool looking lights!

Tag Rugby Competition.

On Wednesday and Thursday evening, children from across Year 5 and 6 took part in the AVSSP Tag Rugby tournaments at Belper Rugby club.  All of the children thoroughly enjoyed taking part and a special mention to our Girls' Team who finished second in their competition. If your child has been inspired by this year's World Cup and is interested in playing Rugby, Belper Rugby Club run a Mini and Junior section every Sunday morning.  Visit their website for more information.

Thank you too to Mr Brown for the fantastic photographs of the competition.
