Well, Spring is definitely upon us...some of the daffs are in bloom, the blossom is out, catkins are on the alder trees and leaves are unfurling on the hazel and hawthorn trees.
Lower School started their sessions by searching for Munchkin eggs (Flame gave us a map of their locations)...many of us heard the grunting of the female munchkins on Monday night as they laid their eggs...we managed to find ten in total.
Flame also asked us to collect the eggs in and make protected nests for them...the goblins always try to steal them to eat at their Spring Feast!
Following a hot chocky and bicci, we divided into five groups and undertook the following challenges (four linked to the children's topic about whales): whale measuring and racing (children learned how to use a range of measuring implements, before marking out the lenghts of 10 different whale species...they then raced the length of the blue whale); whale collage (accurately mark out the outline of a whale and collage the interior - super precision needed here to measure in cms); mapping whale migration routes (focus on baleen whales); harpoon making (we discussed whaling and the ethics around this, before making a harpoon to shoot off our launcher); nest design and manufacture for munchkin eggs.
Upper School children started their sessions with a game of Baby Bird...find a mate, build a nest, hatch five eggs, collect insects to feed the young, protect nest from marauding magpies!
Following this, we split into three groups with challenges focusing on the topic Vikings: shield design and manufacture (huge thanks to Mr Lucas for the shield blanks); memorial stone design and carving; dragon embossing art.
