Well, signs of spring are showing and the mornings are getting brighter...we have catkins on the hazel trees, daffs pushing through and the blossom buds on the plum trees...another month and winter will be behind us!
Lower School have started their sessions with a discussion about British birds...we shared our favourite bird stories and then made a sculpture of a bird...there were some incredible creations!
Following this, children carouselled around their Invisible challenges, with one change...some children looked at a book called Hungry Harry; they made a sculpture-time-line of the story, learned some of the dialogue, added sound effects and then performed the story to the rest of the class!
Upper School started their session with another Equality challenge...half the children were blindfolded and the other half had to guide them round the wood to find and identify different objects by touch. After the experience, children commented on how disorientating and scary the activity was...some of the guides also found it challenging as they felt a weight of responsibility to look after their partner. Children said that the experience helped them to feel empathy for people with disabilities.
Following this, while enjoying a hot chocky and bicci, we read more stories about children with disabilities before carrying on with owl art, mapping of the HMS Beagle's journey and bird feeder making.
With the bird-feeders, this week we made the lard and seed mix to go in the holes...we heated the lard over the stove and noticed a change in state from a solid to a liquid...once the seed was mixed in, we had to wait for the lard to begin to solidify again before we could pack the mix into the feeders...it was messy but fun work!
